Hilda Grahnat is the face behind many a photo. Blogging, creating and shooting from hometown Gothenburg, we catch up to talk fika, ‘Orange Is The New Black’ and touring Tokyo with her.
Hi Hilda! How are you going?
Besides having an annoying cold, I'm great! Lots of exciting things happening this fall.
What have you been busy with today?
I've been working on a complete portfolio website overhaul. I'm far too bad at updating my portfolio with new work, hopefully I will get better at this with the new site.
How would you describe your art and work?
Impulsive and compulsive. I'm a collector of things, moments and impressions. I never photograph for just myself, I need to share it with others for it to become something. To a degree, photography is my way of being involved in things I am interested in but can't do myself, like handicrafts, art, design, style and so on.
What led you to exploring the platforms of photography and collage art?
I've been trying to figure out what it is that makes me take photos, and I think it's my way of seeing and sharing the things I'm interested in -- whether it be light, shapes, history, design or something else.
How did you train for these skills?
I'm currently in photography school, but before that I was self-taught, through trial-and-error shooting for years. I studied graphic design for three years, where I learned a lot about colour, composition and communication and developed my creative sense.
What camera and software do you most enjoy in your photography?
Lately, I enjoy shooting with my iPhone and VSCO Cam more than my DSLR + VSCO Film, because it's so easy, always accessible and undemanding. I recently bought a Fujifilm X100s which I look forward to exploring more.
Where do you hope to take Grahnat the blog in the future?
I really hope I can get back to sharing more of my photography here. For the past two years I've shifted towards using Instagram to share my daily snapshots, but I miss doing longer posts with more story telling.
What is the best part of living in Gothenburg?
I live in a quaint neighborhood that feels like a small town, with 15 minutes to the ocean and 15 minutes to an active part of the city, with my favorite way of transportation - tram.
Your ideal weekend looks like?
A flea market, a pancake brunch, movies, fika out and at home, a trip to the beach and a walk through empty city streets on a Sunday morning.
Favourite book, meal, smell and movie?
I wish I read more, but the last book I read that was worth recommending was probably The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. My mother's cooking. Summer rain. I mostly watch movies and shows to be entertained, and lately I've enjoyed Orange is the New Black, which I think is doing an important thing in telling womens' stories in a new way.
If you could travel anywhere today, where would you choose to go?
I want to go everywhere! But if I have to choose one place, I would go back to Tokyo.
